Youth

New office hours!

My new office  hours are afternoons on Monday and Wednesday (evenings as well during school year), normal hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays (8-4), and 7:30 to around 2:00 on Fridays.  The best days to get ahold of me during the week would be on Tuesdays and Thrusdays.  As usual you can contact me via my cell in emergencies, or to make an appointment, or to contact me outside of the office. My number is 507-329-2593. ~ Amy

Mission Trip Meeting!

There will be a meeting for those youth attending the mission trip on February 12th between services in the Senior High Youth Room.  Parents and youth should plan to attend as this is a mandatory meeting where we will be going over the basics of the trip, forms, trip training dates, and future fundraisers.  If you absolutely cannot be there please let Amy know ahead of time.

Breakfast Club for grade 9-12 is starting up again Thursday February 9th at 7:15 at Amy’s house on 324 W. Clary.  Come enjoy a yummy breakfast and a peer led devotional.  BC is held every other week throughout the school year.

Elementary Bowling/Camp Out!

We will be joining up with American Lutheran again for our annual bowling/camp out day on February 11th from 4:00 till 7:00.  We will be meeting at ALC and then heading to the bowling alley for a game.  There will be a dinner at ALC to follow along with our camp activities. Youth grades k-5. Please sign up outside of Amy’s office to attend.  As usual parents are welcome to join us for the fun!

Ski Trip!

ski trip

I know it’s really early to be thinking of our ski trip but I wanted to make sure you were all informed while I still can.  This year our ski trip is scheduled for January 15th and we will be joined by a few other local churches as we head to Mt.Kato for some fun in the snow.  (yes there will be snow then).  We will be leaving at noon and will be back between 9 and 10 that night.  The best thing is there is no school the next day!

Costs:

Ski/board rental : $18
Lift ticket: $17
Snow Tube: $30

If you plan to ski or board you will need a lift ticket.  Please mark what you plan to do, and if you need to rent equipment when you sign up.  Also please mark if you plan to use your church account.  If you don’t plan to use your account your money for this trip must be turned in by January 8th to the church office.  Please keep in mind that if we do not get enough people to sign up to get the group discount that the trip will be canceled so feel free to invite a friend.  You will need money for dinner which you can purchase at the lodge.  I am happy to answer any questions while I am still available.

Change in Plans

We will no longer be playing Romans & Christians for youth grades 6-12 at American Lutheran on December 14th.  We will be playing with them in March.  Instead come on the 14th for a time of fellowship and worship with youth from Westminster Presbyterian and First United Methodist.  We will be having a meal for all youth and families from 5:00-6:00.  Then at 6:00 our Elementary youth (K-5) will head to the Elementary youth room for Buzz while our older youth (6-12) will head out to bring good cheer to others in our community by caroling.  This is a great way to show others the love of Christ this Christmas season!

Goodie Bake Fundraiser November 2nd-20th.

Who doesn’t love homemade peanut butter cups, peanut butter bites, peanut clusters, Oreo truffles and chocolate dipped pretzels?  Order your goodies from a youth or in the office by the 20th.  This year the goodies are $5 a dozen and payment is needed when you order.  Youth will be making the goodies starting at 4:00 on December 6th & 7th.  Goodies will be delivered this year by the youth you purchased them from, or will be available for pick up on December 11th.  Youth will get a credit for a percentage of our profit by selling, and/or working.  To get the most towards your account sell and work both nights!  Youth make sure to turn in the payments for your orders to Nicky Kempema or Janet Patten by November 20th.  Again no orders will be taken without payment.

Romans & Christians

Join us for this epic game with Westminster Presbyterian and 1st United Methodist on November 2nd from 7:15-8:30 at Westminster Presbyterian.  Youth grades 6-12 are welcome to come to this game/worship night.  We will be closing out the game with an underground worship similar to how Christians in hiding had to worship in Roman times.  We need adults to help out with this game and any interested parent or older sibling should talk to Amy.

Youth and Family Christmas Party!

Operation Christmas Invites

Join us on November 9th for our Youth and Family Christmas Party.  Youth of all ages (pre-k through 12th grade) are welcome to join us along with their families as we celebrate the reason for the season and pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child.  6:00-7:00

Youth and Family Rollerskate Party

Youth of all ages and families are invited to join us on Sunday October 30th to rollerskate with American Lutheran.  The cost is $2 per person and youth 6 and under are free.  Sign up today outside of Amy’s office!

Pirates for the Pantry is sailing our way! October 15th 9:30-12:00

Help feed the needy in our community with Pirates for the Pantry.  In the fall the pantries tend to run short on supplies, not only food but also infant supplies such as formula, and diapers and on toilet paper.  Help out by donating non-perishable food items, infant supplies, or toilet paper.  We are unable to take home canned or open items.  If you won’t be home and still wish to donate you may leave your items at your front door in a plastic bag, or drop off your items at either the Manna food pantry at Westminster Presbyterian, or at the Worthington Christian Church pantry.

Youth grades 6-12 who want to help collect should meet at Max 493 at 9:15 to kick off the morning with prayer and to find out exactly how to ask for donations.  If you wish you can dress up like a pirate and make the morning an adventure.  I know I will be dressing up!  Any parents interested in joining us should talk to Amy to find out more information.  We will be ending around noon at Max 493 with our pizza party for all those who helped collect.

 Trip Sign ups!

Sign up for the Adventure Trip to Fort Courage in the Black Hills of South Dakota outside of Amy’s office.  This trip is for grades 6-8.  We will be riding horses, doing a lot of hiking, cooking over fires, having outdoor worship and Bible study, having an overnight, and hiking up mountains in God’s beautiful creation.  Live in a 1880′s style fort for the week at this rustic and beautiful camp.

Our mission trip is to the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Youth grades 9-12 need to sign up by October 23rd to reserve their spot.  We will be serving with Youth Works by doing work projects such as painting a house, building a wheelchair ramp, doing minor landscaping, assisting in nursing homes, or helping in a community garden.  We will be traveling to Warrensburg NY the small town home to around 4,000 people to serve in whatever way we can.

The cost to be fundraised in accounts or paid is $275.  Keep your eyes open for account updates coming in the mail soon!

Wednsday night activities start soon!

With school started and summer over it’s time for Buzz and Y.F.C. to start up again very soon.  Below is the schedule through the end of the year.  Keep in mind that dates and topics may change and any changes will be reflected here on the website.  Buzz is for youth grades k-5 and is a play off of F.L.Y. or First Lutheran Youth.  Our Elementary youth came up with it years ago and I think it’s pretty clever.  Buzz runs from 6:00 to 6:45 on Wednesday nights and is run in the Elementary youth room.  Parents should plan on picking up their youth in the youth room at the end of Buzz.   Y.F.C. stands for Youth For Christ and is for youth grades 6-12 and runs from 7:00 to 8:00.  Our youth came up with that name too!  We do all sorts of things in Y.F.C. including some service projects, fun games, Bible studies, small group discussions, large group discussions, prayer, worship, and fellowship.  We also have a meal from 5:30-6:00 and if there are any parents who would be willing to prepare and serve, help me serve, or clean up, it would be greatly appreciated.  I want to thank all those who helped in these ways last year, along with those who helped lead small group, and assisted with Buzz.  If you are ever interested in helping out with Buzz I’m looking for adults who can help lead songs, games, and crafts.

Lifelight update!

Usually we don’t have any conflicts with scheduling but this year is a first and it looks like there will be school on the first day of the festival. Don’t worry! I will take a trip out there with our other leaders and set up our camp area at the regularly scheduled time. Any youth who don’t have school conflicts are welcome to join us at that time. Then we will be meeting at 3:30 after school gets out at church and I will drive the rest of the youth to the festival. This is open to all youth going into grades 6-12 and is an amazingly fun event. Please sign up outside of my office next to a food item and then plan on bringing that item. Also the trip is $10 which you can pay for with your accounts. We will be returning around 10 the morning of the 5th. For those youth who need to come back early for the senior high marching band we will talk with parents and figure out rides so you can enjoy both the concert and your marching competition.

Lifelight is coming around again and it’s time to start thinking about going. Join us on the 2nd of September as we head out to the festival grounds and set up our camp site and enjoy wonderful Christian bands such as Reliant K and Tenth Avenue North.  Cost is $10 to help cover the cost of our campsites.  Sign up next to a food item outside of Amy’s office.  If you need to leave early on Saturday so you can compete in the marching band competition on Sunday we will figure out rides so you can at least enjoy part of the festival.  I am also in need of adult leaders for this trip.  Any parents or older siblings should talk with me if interested.

Flamingos are out and about!

They’re back!  After a year off Frank and his friends are back in MN.  Authorities from Miami, Florida have warne that any day, any hour, any moment your lawn is in danger of being taken over by Frank the Flamingo and his friends.  Frank and his pink feathered friends are looking for a great lawn to live in.  Watch out, they may just settle themselves in your lawn.  If the flock should happen to migrate to your yard you are encouraged to contact Amy at 376-6148.  To have youth put a flock of 10 flamingos in someone’s yard we are asking for a $10 donation.  The flock will stay in their yard until they contact Amy and have the flamingos removed, or find out where the flamingos are heading next and move them themselves.  To have teh youth move the flock it is $20, if you contact Amy and decide to move the flock yourself the cost is $10.  Flamingo insurance is available for $10 and guarantees that NO FLAMINGOS will enter your yard!

We are tending the community garden July 24th through the 29th.  Amy is heading out with whoever can help on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 am pending weather.  We will go out on Friday and possibly Wednesday if needed.

Wednesday July 27th is a youth fun day with Amy from 10-4.  Meet at church and plan on heading to one of the parks for outdoor fun and games such as the infamous game don’t get your face mauled off.  Youth entering grade 6 though our graduated youth are welcome to come!  We will be having lunch together so don’t worry about packing a lunch.

Kids Against Hunger!

We had a good crew of 8 packaging meals this last Sunday (June 5th) at a Kids Against Hunger site in Sioux Falls, SD.  Our crew packed for nearly 2 hours and was able to feed 2,400 children!  For some children this will be the only meal they get that day, or for even a few days.  Thank you to those who came and helped pack!  We couldn’t have done it without you.  Thanks as well to those of you who helped donate money to ship the food out.  While we were at the packaging site we found out that the meals of rice, veggies, soy, and chicken flavoring were for some kids going to replace mud cookies that they were eating.  That’s right some of these kids were being served mud cookies for a cent a piece so that they would have something to eat.  It really shows what a difference we can do in our world.  The meals we packaged will be sent out to needy children around the world.  The Kids Against Hunger crew even have meals that go out in the backpack program in Sioux Falls.  I hope that the next time we go and serve that we will have much more help so we can help that many more needy kids

Summer youth activities:

Serving with Kids Against Hunger June 5th 12:15-5:00.  Sign up to let Amy know how many to expect as we package up meals to help starving children all over the world!

Vacation Bible School.  June 13th through the 17th from 9:00 am until noon.  Our theme this year is Son Surf Beach Bash!  Youth ages 3 through grade 6 are welcome to attend.  Youth are asked to bring $3 to help pay for snacks and also to bring offerings that will go to support our compassion child.  Help is still needed in the kitchen, and with teachers. Please speak to Lisa Waldner or Melissa Lancaster if you are interested and able to help.  We won’t be able to do VBS without the help of our adults and youth!

Our mission trip is from June 18th through the 24th. Please pray for our youth as we go serve the people of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.  The mission trip service will be on the 26th.  There is a meeting for parents and youth on the 12thafter the second service.

The final adventure trip meeting will be on June 26th between services. Parents and youth should plan to attend as we will be going over the final forms and details about our trip.

Our Adventure Trip will be July 10th through the 15th.  We are heading to the Badlands Ministries in Medora ND.  There our youth will be pushing their limits as they not only challenge themselves and encourage each other with our adventure activities and with staying awake during the night.

 Spring is here!

Spring is finally here and we are busy with several activities for our youth.  The first thing coming up is our Easter Breakfast where we will be serving eggs, sausage, rolls, juice, milk, and coffee.  We need youth to help out with serving this breakfast which is from 8:30-11:30 on Easter morning.  There is a sign up sheet outside of Amy’s office.

The second event is our end of the year (youth group wise) party on the 27th!  Families will be receiving letters in the mail explaining more about our party.  It is open to all youth families, and is not just for our youth but is for their parents as well.  It will be at Amy’s house in Bigelow weather pending.  If it is chilly out, or if it is rainy we will have the party at church.  Families are asked to help with the meal by bringing either a side dish, dessert, or drink.

On May 7th we will be having the kick-off for our community garden.  Last summer our middle school youth came up with the idea of starting a community garden when asked about fighting oppression in our community.  We will be doing that by providing the underprivileged the opportunity to have fresh produce.  We are teaming up with several other churches along with the Collaborative to work on the garden.  Please meet at the Viking Terrace Apartments on Burlington from two until five on the 7th to help us till up the soil, and plant the garden.  Please park at American Reformed or First Matthew’s church or on the street. The parking spaces at the apartment are reserved for residents only.

Buzz & Y.F.C. start up again on the 22nd!

Buzz is a play off the word FLY (First Lutheran Youth) that our elementary youth came up with last year.  Buzz is from 6:00 to 6:45 and includes using different mediums such as cooking, crafts, games, and discussion to help our youth learn about Christ and grow in their faith.  We are almost always in need of adult help so if any adults are interested in helping they should talk to Amy.  Schedules and more information will be posted throughout the year.  Also information can be found on the youth blog.

Y.F.C. or Youth For Christ is our middle school and senior high youth group.  This group meets from 7:00-8:00 so the confirmation age youth are able to attend as well.  This year we will be using small group, worship, games, and challenge activities to help our group grow as a team, and grow in Christ.  We even are going to be making bricks like the Israelites did.  We are in need of some dirt to do this?  Anyone have dirt for us? Potting soil doesn’t work well.  Again look for scheduling here and on our blog.

Silent Auction Update!

Our silent auction is starting soon and we need your help.  This year we are going to try to put together gift baskets with the themes “Family Movie Night”, “Family Game Night”, & “family Read Night”.  We would appreciate if each family would consider bringing in an item for one or more of these baskets.  Please bring in your donation by February 14th for it to be in the auction.  If you can’t donate to one of these baskets there are several other ways you can help. You can donate handcrafted items such as artwork, woodwork, sewn, or knit items.  Also a popular item on  our auctions has been your time for babysitting, doing yard work, or just helping out.  Can you offer 4 hours to someone?  Below is a list of suggested items.

www.wgtnfly.blogspot.com This blog is a lot easier for me to update and looks a lot better. So check it out!

Youth Group:

Our meal is from 5:30-5:45.  Please come on time to get food.
Elementary youth group is 6:00-6:45 on Wednesday nights.
Junior and Senior high youth group is 7:00-8:00, also on Wednesday nights, and will be meeting in separate places.
Parents: Please pick up your youth(s) at the appropriate time.
NOTE: Shoes with wheels in them should not be used on the carpet. The wheels seem to be making marks that do not come out.

Mentoring Opportunities:
Any Senior High youth who are interested in mentoring and helping out with the elementary church school, come talk to Amy. We will eventually have monthly meetings prior to the arrival of the elementary youth. Also thank you to those of you who already help out. Your help is greatly appreciated and needed.

A reminder about youth group… All are welcome!
