Yesterday Negasse stopped by my office to talk with me about the church he is starting in Worthington. He is evangelizing people from the Ethopian community. We had a lively discussion as we had a common connection. We both know Belina Sarka who is a Lutheran Ethiopian pastor who has traveled widely in the United States to speak about the Ethopian people and their struggles. I knew 2 of Belina’s children many years ago because they escaped from Ethiopia and were raised by him and his wife in Hawaii. His boys left Ethiopia so that they would not have to serve in the army under the rule of the Dictator at that time. Talking with Negasse brought back many memories of that time. Negasse’s main reason for visiting me was to find out what he needed to do to be recognized by the government as a church. He is an impressive man who wants to reach his people for Jesus Christ and he sees much need for that in the local Ethiopian community. My time with him helped me to realize once again the precious Gospel we all share. The Gospel knows no language or cultural barriers it simply seeks to give life to all. It was great to meet a young man who is so dedicated to proclaiming it. My thoughts and prayers are with him in his ministry. Please pray for him, his wife and daughter and his new church.

I have been thinking about the parable of the pharisee and the tax collector in Luke chapter 18. What a fascinating little story. Here we have the pharisee who we think of as a bad person today but in reality was a person who is looked up to by the jewish people congratulating himself on how devout a person he is. He is sooo glad he is better than all of the people of disreputable character like the tax collector who is standing near him in the temple. The tax collector as many of you may know is hated by the jewish people. He collected taxes by any means necessary often with the use of force and violence. Yet here he is affirmed by God because he realizes he is a sinful man. He knows that he falls short of being a good observant jew. Just a poor sinner in need of a savior. Interesting isn’t it that the esteemed religious leader falls short in God’s eyes yet the outcast tax collector does not. I guess that means that Jesus accepts us all, his only desire being that we realize we the sinful beings that we are need a savior’s love and forgiveness.

I have a friend who enjoys conflict. He is one of those people who will say things to provoke a reaction and sometimes an intense discussion. He is a great guy and fun to be with but on occasion he feels some need to stir things up. I wonder why is that? Is it an old competitive streak or a way of communicating? I guess I really don’t know but I think about him once in a while. Conflict is always with us in some form isn’t it. Whether it be in our jobs, family life, interests in sports etc. there is often the potential for some type of disagreement. Our Christian life is no different as we come together on Sunday morning from many different backgrounds and religious experience. While we are sitting in church there are other things tugging away at us. Other things which we struggle with in life like jobs, relationships, kids, hobbies, families to name a few. These are all important parts of our lives just how do we make it all work? There is a simple answer “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind..” How easy to say and how hard to cary out the call of Jesus to put him first. Yet that is what this Christian walk is all about. You and I spend our Christian lives struggling to keep our Lord first and foremost in our lives. This struggle is a journey not a destination. We will never fully be able to accomplish this task. What we can do is live faithfully and ask for God’s help often. Jesus loves us a great deal my friends, he will guide us, carry us, seek us throughout our journey. Embrace this journey with Jesus he will guide and bless you along life’s way.

Wasn’t the C&W service fun? I enjoyed being at beautiful and chilly Pioneer Village yesterday. It was great to see so many people from the community and surrounding area at the service. I thought that all of the participants did a great job. I had a good time interreacting with cowboy Travis Ternus as he told his cowboy’s tale. We all had a laugh and gained something from his story about intolerance. I am always struck by the wonderful 4 part harmony of the Southwest Connection. Some styles of singing are timeless aren’t they? I was especially moved by their rendition of “Turn your radio on”. What about that Jesus rap by Lisa Waldner what a super job she did. Oh their are so many people to thank who made the service possible.

I think what is most impressive to me about the service is that it is purely about proclamation. We go to Pioneer Village with all of the work it entails to Proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a new way. Sometimes when we are in the same worship space every week we get a little complacent which is quite natural. Some of us may tend to forget that we are part of the community and are called to share the Gospel with the members of the community. The Gospel is not ours to keep at First. We are called to share it with the world. The service at Pioneer Village reminds me of that fact. When I see so many people from different congregations and communities I realize that the Good News in Jesus Christ is truly for all of us. All of us not some of us. How great it is to know that God’s love is for all no exceptions. Thank you members of First for your support in making the C&W service such as success and powerful witness to our commmunty.

Well I’m back! It always amazes me how vacations throw me off my regular schedule. I think that is good because vacations are supposed to be a break in the schedule. During our time in the Black Hills I slept a little later, ate a little more, spent time with animals that I don’t see around here, hung out with my kids, celebrated my 31 st wedding anniversary with Sara, visited some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and enjoyed not having a regular schedule. All of the vacation time helped me to recharge my batteries for the busy fall season at 1st. The real struggle is coming back to a schedule of: work, exercise etc. I find that when I first return from vacation getting up to exercise early in the morning seems to be harder and getting back into a work schedule that includes sermon prep time, meeting time, confirmation, council meetings, community meetings, counseling etc is a challenge.

Oh it all works out as after a couple of weeks the schedule starts to feel normal. The exercise is easier to make time for and the many responsibilities of ministry start to fall into place. I find that there is always one constant that helps me to fully embrace my calling here at 1st and that is my prayer time. When I am on vacation my prayer time varies according to what we are doing that day. When I am back at work my prayer time becomes an anchor that starts off my day and points me toward the future. I guess you could say that Jesus “Takes the wheel” in a sense and helps me to refocus, re-energize and re-enter his wonderful call to me – serving the people of this treasured church.

I have just received a request from Connie Russell (Lagasse) to be my friend on Facebook. Who is Connie Russell you may ask? My answer is that is a good question as I don’t recall her by her married or maiden name. She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1970. I graduated in 1968 yet I can’t place her. You see my memory just isn’t that good. I am often surprised on Facebook by requests for friendship through that medium by High School mates I can’t recall. I wonder if it is age or just a poor memory. The other night I was playing a memory game with friends. The object of the game is to look at a picture for 30 seconds and then answer some questions about the picture. I failed miserably in trying to recall details. Memory is an illusive thing isn’t it? Why can I remember baseball statistics, Elvis trivia, old songs, phone numbers, sermons etc. yet have such a poor memory when it comes to people in my distant past. Oh I have to go now I just remembered I have a visit scheduled.

Have you ever noticed how quickly time passes. How quickly seasons change: our kids grow up, health changes, our friends come and go, our communities change. The world our world seems in a constant state of change. This summer I have noticed this for some reason more than any other. I am amazed that we are almost through the summer season. Maybe it is because school is starting so early this year but somehow I am sitting here wondering where summer has gone.

When I reflect on all of this I am reminded of the Gospel of Mark. I am always struck by how quickly Jesus goes from one place to another. How quickly he moves from healing, to speaking, to praying, and finally to his death. Jesus life changes rapidly as he seeks to bring the Gospel to those around him. He is in constant motion and lets nothing stop him or slow him down. I think there is a great message for us here. Jesus embraces change. He uses the changing circumstances of his life to teach us that while change is always with us and life is often uncertain. The presence of God in Christ Jesus is constantly and consistently with us. Many things may swirl around in our lives but the word of God in Jesus is true and solid. His word endures through it all. We can claim that everyday and count on it in all seasons of life.

Pastor why is Pastor Mike leaving American Lutheran Church and the ministry? Why would he not want to be a pastor anymore? These and other questions like these have been asked of me several times since I returned from vacation. I have had many conversations with Mike as he has searched his heart considering what he wants to do with his life at this time. Mike has told me that he is torn because he has enjoyed being a Pastor. He loves many things about ministry but he also has another love – computer programming and systems analysis. He has been out of that field for more than a dozen years and has felt a growing yearning to go back to it. The timing for change was right forMike and Nancy as both children are now in college. Now seemed to be the best time to make a change Mike said and the perfect job situation came along. Mike knows that he will miss many things about the ministry but he considers his new job to be an opportunity to minister in another way. Yes, being a pastor is a special calling but so is computer programming, stay at home parenting, bricklaying, managing, teaching, farming etc. Martin Luther said that our jobs are our vocations for spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that a Pastor’s calling is no more or less important in doing that than any other job.

Transitions are difficult. I and many others will miss Pastor Mike a great deal. He has shared many special and unique gifts with American Lutheran and the larger community. Mike is a dear friend and I would rather he stay in Worthington. I have enjoyed the many hours we have spent together. He is funny, intelligent and Christ-centered. His leaving will take me sometime to get over but I know that the choice he is making will be a blessing to those many people he will encounter in his new profession. He will always carry the loving message of Jesus Christ in his heart. I am grateful for his many years here and I am confident that God will do something exciting and new with American Lutheran. I believe as I am sure many of you do that God will provide what American needs. I wish Pastor Mike God’s peace and blessing in the days, weeks and months ahead.
